Tank Project Sparks Fury in Crosspool
6 Jun
Summary
- Residents fear impact on local wildlife and lack of transparency.
- A £3.6m underground storm tank project is planned for Calver Fields.
- Work is set to begin on July 6, with up to 15 lorries daily.

Plans for a new underground storm overflow tank at Calver Fields in Crosspool have drawn significant concern from local residents and businesses. Yorkshire Water's £3.6 million project aims to install a 2,500m³ tank to manage excess wastewater, preventing its discharge into the River Rivelin. Construction is slated to commence on July 6 and is expected to last 18 months, potentially involving up to 15 lorries per day to remove excavated earth.
Community members have voiced worries about the project's impact on local wildlife, including birds, insects, and potentially badgers, with fears that a wildlife-rich bank may be destroyed for site access. A major point of contention has been the perceived lack of transparency from Yorkshire Water, with some residents only learning about the drop-in sessions shortly before they occurred. Despite Yorkshire Water stating they sent letters and held sessions in May and August 2025, attendance was reportedly low. The company has assured that an ecologist will be present and further surveys conducted to protect local flora and fauna.
