Summary
- A £22,500 grant will restore green spaces at Crewe Heritage Centre.
- The project aims to recreate pre-industrial natural landscapes.
- New wildlife habitats and pocket gardens are part of the plan.

Crewe Heritage Centre is set to undergo a significant transformation thanks to a £22,500 grant awarded to the Crewe Heritage Trust. The funding will support a project focused on restoring the site's green spaces and recreating the natural landscape that existed before the railway's arrival in 1837. This ambitious plan includes establishing a green corridor and introducing various wildlife habitats.
Elements such as bird boxes, insect hotels, and a mini pond will be incorporated to support local biodiversity. Additionally, six distinct pocket gardens are planned, each designed to narrate different aspects of Crewe's rich history. The locomotive workshop will also see improvements, including the installation of new water butts for rainwater harvesting and a green roof.
Gordon Heddon, chair of the trust, highlighted that the grant from the Julia Rausing Trust will help the center reconnect with its pre-industrial heritage. He stated the project will transform the site into a vibrant space that supports nature, well-being, and community pride, while also serving as an educational resource about the past. The center is scheduled to reopen on April 1st, with drop-in activities planned in connection with the project. Interested volunteers can express their interest via the center's website.
