Village toilets ruin reputation; visitors seen squatting
27 May
Summary
- Public toilets repeatedly closed due to plumbing issues.
- Visitors directed to business facilities; some seen squatting.
- Parish council criticizes county council's investment and maintenance.

The state of public toilets in the iconic Northumberland village of Craster is severely damaging its reputation among thousands of visitors. Craster Parish Council has reported repeated closures of the facilities, most recently due to plumbing failures, forcing tourists to use local businesses' restrooms.
One resident observed visitors resorting to squatting in nearby bushes, highlighting the dire situation. Councillor Martin Smith of Craster Parish Council criticized Northumberland County Council, accusing them of exploiting Craster as a 'honeypot' for parking and tourism revenue while providing minimal investment back into the village.
He emphasized that the recurring breakdown of toilets offers a poor first impression to visitors. The parish council is demanding a full refurbishment, which they claim was previously promised but has been delayed. This cycle of temporary fixes and prolonged delays is no longer acceptable.
Northumberland County Council stated that significant investment has already been made, leading to fewer service disruptions. They acknowledged that occasional blockages occur, often due to inappropriate items like nappies and wet wipes being flushed. Further improvements to the Craster toilets are reportedly planned.
