21 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Experts to study lake revitalization's impact on nesting birds.
- Court aims to ensure development is ecocentric, not just anthropocentric.
- Report on bird safety in Coimbatore lakes due by February 20, 2026.

The Madras High Court has commissioned experts to investigate the ecological impact of lake revitalization projects in Coimbatore. Specifically, the court seeks to determine if the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation's development activities at Ukkadam and Valankulam lakes are detrimental to the nesting and activities of local bird populations.
An expert committee from the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History has been granted two months to conduct this study. The court emphasized the need for development to be ecocentric, not solely anthropocentric, and expects a comprehensive report with recommendations by February 20, 2026.
This directive follows the Corporation's submission regarding the minimal footprint of solar panels and the exclusive use of rowing boats for rescue, alongside the cessation of laser light shows. The court also extended a ban on sound and light shows to all lakes controlled by local bodies in the area.
