Grey seal pups in Cornwall are born into a challenging winter environment. These newborns, lacking waterproof blubber, depend on a coat of white fur for warmth and their mothers for sustenance. Mothers hunt for fish, returning to nurse their pups every few hours. This crucial bonding period allows the pair to recognize each other by scent and voice.
After approximately three weeks, the mother seal departs permanently, leaving the pup to embark on a solitary existence. Without formal training, these young seals must instinctively learn to swim, dive, and hunt amidst strong currents and rough seas. Their early survival is precarious, with significant threats from starvation, disease, and marine pollution.
Even with a developing adult coat, a young pup remains highly vulnerable, especially as the tide advances, encroaching on its sheltered cove. This forces the pup to confront the unforgiving ocean, highlighting the extreme difficulties faced by these marine mammals during their critical first year.
