Cornwall Council's Kernow Reuse Shops have successfully diverted approximately 500 tonnes of waste from recycling centres over the last 18 months. These shops, which sell pre-loved items saved from landfill, have seen a significant uptake in popularity, with around 100,000 items finding new homes.
The initiative, which began with the first shop opening in Truro in early 2024, now boasts eight locations across Cornwall. These include sites in St Erth, Bude, St Austell, Falmouth, United Downs, Launceston, and most recently, Helston. The variety of goods available ranges from toys and sports equipment to furniture, homeware, and electricals.
Councillor Loic Rich highlighted the 500-tonne milestone as a significant achievement, underscoring the growing popularity of the reuse shops. Becky Parry of SUEZ, which manages the sites, emphasized the shops' role in fostering reuse opportunities, supporting the circular economy, and providing economic benefits to residents by helping them save money and reduce waste.
