Comrie Residents Rescue 5,000 Snowdrops from Flood Defences
13 Nov
Summary
- Thousands of beloved riverside snowdrops destroyed for flood defences
- Locals rescued 5,000 plants and plan to create Scotland's first snowdrop village
- Ambitious target of 300,000 snowdrops along new flood wall

In February 2025, the start of flood defence construction in Comrie resulted in the destruction of thousands of the village's beloved riverside snowdrops. However, determined locals sprang into action, managing to rescue 5,000 of the plants and relocate them to safety.
Now, the newly-formed Comrie Snowdrops group has an ambitious plan to transform the village into Scotland's first dedicated snowdrop destination. With £5,000 in lottery funding, they aim to plant 300,000 snowdrops along the 3km flood wall, creating a series of winter walking trails for visitors.
The group's spokesperson, Andrew Ryalls, expressed the community's strong attachment to the snowdrops, stating that it was "very raw to see them destroyed" during the early stages of the flood prevention work. But the successful rescue mission has fueled their determination to make Comrie a prime spot for the annual Scottish Snowdrop Festival, offering a free and accessible destination for all.
