A World Oil Recycling facility in Compton is facing scrutiny after receiving more than 70 complaints about gas-like odors since the start of 2026. This marks a significant surge in issues compared to previous years, with nearby Jefferson Elementary School also reporting the offensive smells. The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has launched an investigation and issued five Notices of Violation.
Inspectors conducted over a dozen site visits and found that emissions from a wastewater storage tank may have contributed to the odors. A separate incident involving a small fire, stemming from a breakdown in the oil distillation process, resulted in three public nuisance violations. Additionally, contractor-operated equipment was cited for emissions and improper maintenance, leading to further violations.
