Neighbors Fight Golf Course Plan on Grove Land
5 Jul
Summary
- Citrus grove proposed for private golf course with cabins.
- Residents fear traffic, environmental, and lifestyle impacts.
- County may purchase grove for conservation instead.
Collier County neighbors are expressing strong opposition to a plan that would transform a long-standing citrus grove into a private, members-only golf course. The proposal by SWJR Naples LLC includes recreational facilities and up to 10 cabins for members. This comes after the county commission previously rejected a more intensive housing development on the same approximately 160-acre property in January. Residents raised concerns about traffic, environmental impact, wildlife, and the loss of agricultural land during an informational meeting.
The developer's representatives argue that the golf course would be less impactful than housing, emphasizing eco-friendly designs and a projected low peak-hour traffic generation of only 60 trips. They also claim a market demand for additional private golf courses in the region. However, many residents remain skeptical, questioning the need for another golf course and the true long-term intentions for the land, despite assurances that traditional housing would require new approvals.
Adding to the opposition, the county is exploring the possibility of preserving the citrus grove through the taxpayer-funded Conservation Collier program. In May, commissioners voted to proceed with appraisals and negotiations for a potential purchase. This move offers an alternative to the golf course development, as the citrus grove is reportedly struggling due to citrus greening disease and is no longer considered economically viable by its owners.
