Coimbatore Transforms Dumpyard into Green Oasis
4 Feb
Summary
- Over 40,000 saplings planted on 41 acres at Vellalore dumpyard.
- A 250-tonne-per-day Bio-CNG plant is under development at the site.
- Sanitary landfill and waste-to-energy facilities are also planned.

Coimbatore is undertaking a significant environmental transformation at its Vellalore dumpyard. Over 41,850 saplings, comprising 64 native tree species, have been planted across 41 acres since April 2025, with ongoing maintenance ensuring their growth.
This green initiative is part of a broader city-wide effort to conserve natural resources. Complementing the plantation drive, the Coimbatore Corporation is developing a 250-tonne-per-day Bio-CNG plant. A concession agreement was signed on August 6, 2025, for this public-private partnership project.
Further waste management plans include a waste-to-energy facility for non-recyclable waste. Additionally, a sanitary landfill, designed to Central Pollution Control Board guidelines, is proposed for the safe disposal of residual waste, incorporating leachate and gas management systems.
