Coimbatore's budget for the financial year 2026-27 dedicates a significant ₹627.94 crores towards long-term climate resilience. A substantial portion, ₹518.68 crores, is allocated for water resources management. This includes ambitious plans for restoring public wells, rejuvenating the Singanallur and Senkulam lakes, and establishing sewage treatment plants along the Noyyal river.
Further investment includes ₹122.50 crores for enhancing urban greening and biodiversity. An amount of ₹7.50 crores is specifically set aside for climate adaptation strategies, with a strong emphasis on rainwater harvesting and the implementation of cool roof projects. These plans are designed to unfold over the next five years, with annual budget renewals.
The corporation has established a dedicated climate cell to oversee these efforts. Initial phases will focus on reducing heat in corporation buildings through greening and solar panel installations, with plans to extend these measures to private buildings in the second phase. Additional initiatives like tree plantation and the development of Miyawaki forests in parks are also integral to the climate-resilient strategy, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and the expansion of urban green spaces.
