Coimbatore Garbage Trucks Overloaded, Sacks Used for Waste
25 Jun
Summary
- Vehicles are overloaded with waste, leading to sacks tied outside.
- Coimbatore generates 1,100 tonnes of waste daily.
- 200 new electric vehicles are on order to fix the shortage.

Garbage collection vehicles operated by the Coimbatore Corporation are being used to transport waste in sacks tied to their rear due to a significant shortage of vehicles. The existing fleet, comprising 401 light commercial vehicles, 131 battery-operated vehicles, and 626 larger transport vehicles, is insufficient for the city's daily waste generation of about 1,100 tonnes.
Sanitation workers and drivers have been instructed to collect excess dry waste in sacks when vehicle bins are full, while wet waste is loaded inside. This practice helps avoid additional trips to transfer stations. Drivers report that vehicles often exceed their 700 kg capacity.
In response, Corporation officials have ordered 200 electric vehicles as a first phase. These new vehicles are expected to alleviate the strain on the current fleet and reduce the need for unconventional waste transport methods.
