Coimbatore Clears 300 Tons of Diwali Waste in Record Time

On October 22nd, 2025, the Coimbatore Corporation undertook a massive cleanup operation to clear the city of Diwali cracker waste. The corporation deployed a total of 30 additional trucks, 110 three-wheeled vehicles, and 815 standard waste collection trucks to manage the surge in waste following the festival.

The cleanup efforts commenced early on Tuesday, with conservancy staff working across all five zones of the city. Officials instructed drivers and workers to handle the flammable cracker waste with utmost care, avoiding any potential fire hazards.

While the initial rainfall on Tuesday hindered the sweeping process, the corporation managed to clear approximately 1,500 tons of waste citywide on Wednesday, compared to the typical daily collection of 1,100 tons. The additional waste primarily consisted of dry refuse, including sweet boxes and savoury packaging.

Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran acknowledged that a 45% absenteeism rate among conservancy staff on Tuesday had affected the collection efficiency. However, by Wednesday, the staff attendance improved to around 85%, enabling the corporation to manage the waste piles effectively.

The 300 tons of cracker waste collected will be dumped separately at the Vellalore dumpyard, where it will undergo a three-month neutralization process before being processed. This measure is crucial to prevent any fire hazards that could arise from the flammable materials.
