Facing increasing human-elephant conflict, the Coffee Board of India has initiated a comprehensive study to develop preventive measures for coffee plantations. The research will focus on Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Hassan districts, areas heavily impacted by elephant incursions. This proactive step aims to safeguard coffee growers and plantation laborers from damage and financial losses caused by wild herds.
A dedicated task force, headed by senior scientist Surendra Varma, will spearhead the study. The initiative requires collaboration with the state government and forest department, with hopes for positive engagement from officials. The Coffee Board also plans to seek support from neighboring Kerala for a thorough report and actionable recommendations.
The study will employ digital monitoring and field visits to analyze elephant behavior and conflict patterns. It seeks to clarify the roles of various governmental bodies and recognize the contributions of planters, associations, and laborers. Ultimately, the project intends to restore confidence and support the coffee community.
