China's $2.2B Floating Solar Farm to Power Qinhuangdao City
27 Oct
Summary
- 1.8-gigawatt floating solar project in Bohai Sea
- Expected to generate 2.75 billion kWh of electricity annually
- Projected to reduce local coal usage by 920,000 tons per year

In October 2025, Chinese officials announced the construction of a colossal 1.8-gigawatt floating solar energy project in the Bohai Sea, off the coast of Hebei province. The $2.2 billion project, a collaboration between four state-owned companies, is currently underway and is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
Once operational, the solar installation is projected to generate approximately 2.75 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, enough to supply nearly half the power used in the nearby city of Qinhuangdao. Additionally, the project is expected to reduce local coal usage by about 920,000 tons, cutting over 2 million tons of carbon pollution annually. Experts estimate that the offshore solar farm could supply over 10% of China's clean energy growth by 2030.
Beyond the environmental benefits, the solar project is also expected to create around 2,000 local jobs and generate over $140 million in annual industrial output. This large-scale renewable energy initiative is part of China's ongoing efforts to expand its green energy initiatives and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
