China Faces Extreme Weather: Lawmaker Urges Action
12 Feb
Summary
- Northward shift of summer rain belt noted by meteorologist.
- Improved forecasting and infrastructure investment are crucial.
- Public education needed to counter overreliance on past experience.

China experienced a "particularly prominent" disaster situation in 2025, highlighting the urgent need to enhance disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities amid climate change, according to a national legislator and veteran meteorologist. Zheng Yongguang noted a significant northward shift of the country's summer rain belt, a trend that intensified last year, leading to prolonged torrential rains and floods in northern regions.
Zheng's proposal calls for deeper research into extreme weather mechanisms and calls for greater investment in meteorological infrastructure, including advanced forecasting systems. While forecasting has improved, he emphasized the need for longer lead times to reduce casualties and stressed the importance of developing core technologies like AI for reliable weather predictions. Public education is also crucial to ensure warnings are heeded, as seen in areas unprepared for unprecedented downpours.
Given the rise in weather-related accidents, particularly in tourism, Zheng suggested mandatory measures to keep tourists from high-risk areas. He also highlighted the growing demand for tailored meteorological services for emerging sectors like the low-altitude economy and enhanced marine monitoring. Strengthening meteorological services is deemed essential for safeguarding lives and fostering high-quality development as the economy expands.
