China Solar Power Surges Past Coal
1 Sep
Summary
- Solar capacity now exceeds coal for the first time.
- Solar generation grew 15.5% year-over-year.
- China aims for carbon peak by 2030, neutrality by 2060.

China has reached a significant milestone, with its installed solar power capacity now exceeding that of coal-fired power for the first time. As of the end of July 2026, the nation's solar capacity reached 1.286 billion kilowatts, marginally surpassing coal's 1.285 billion kilowatts.
This transition is further evidenced by a 15.5% rise in solar generation during the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, contributing significantly to the country's overall energy supply. The National Energy Administration notes the rapid and steady growth of solar power's role in the energy transition.
China has committed to peaking its carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The country's installed renewable capacity, including a record 315 gigawatts of solar and 119 gigawatts of wind power last year, now accounts for over 80% of new power generation capacity, demonstrating a strong move away from coal.
