Cheshire tip closures cause chaos, longer journeys
25 Feb
Summary
- Three household waste recycling centres closed by Cheshire East Council.
- Residents face significantly longer journeys to dispose of waste.
- Increased demand at remaining sites leads to traffic queues.

Cheshire East Council has closed three household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) in 2024, leading to increased travel times and frustration for residents. The closure decision was made to concentrate resources on the most utilized sites, as running and maintenance costs became unsustainable.
For those in the north of the county, the nearest facility is now Macclesfield, resulting in longer journeys and traffic congestion on nearby roads. Some residents, like those in Poynton and Bollington, report round trips taking 30 to 45 minutes, impacting their ability to dispose of waste and potentially increasing fly-tipping.
Cheshire East Council acknowledges the longer journeys and is exploring ways to improve access and its booking system for peak periods. The authority is also looking to expand its mobile tip service to support areas with limited access to HWRCs.
