Summary
- 100 tonnes of waste dumped daily into Kolathuvanchery water body.
- Residents suffer health issues from toxic smoke from burning waste.
- Civic infrastructure has not kept pace with rapid urban growth.

Kolathuvanchery, a village panchayat near Iyyappanthangal in Kancheepuram district, is facing a severe waste crisis. Approximately 100 tonnes of plastic, meat, and household waste are dumped and burnt daily in the local water body. This has led to residents, including young children, experiencing breathing difficulties and other health issues due to toxic smoke.
Residents report that the frequency of door-to-door garbage collection has significantly decreased, contributing to the accumulation of waste. Despite submitting petitions and assurances from district officials in 2021 to clear the waste and implement a restoration plan, the problem has worsened over the past five years. The Kancheepuram district collector has stated that the site will be inspected, and necessary actions will be taken.
