25 Sep
Summary
- Chennai's waterways are being cleared ahead of the Northeast monsoon.
- Nearly 50% of the ₹42 crore waterway cleaning work is completed.
- Authorities are also clearing sand bars at river mouths to manage tides.

Chennai's Water Resources Department is accelerating efforts to clear clogged waterways in preparation for the Northeast monsoon, with approximately 50% of the ₹42 crore project now finished. This annual initiative targets floating waste, debris, and aquatic weeds across major and minor waterways in Chennai and surrounding districts.
Deploying hundreds of machines, including amphibious excavators, the department is focusing on key rivers and canals like Adyar and Cooum. The first phase of desilting is set to conclude by early October, with officials stating it will significantly reduce flood risk and backflow, enabling rivers to manage substantial rainfall.
Beyond clearing waterways, work is underway to remove sand bars at river mouths to control seawater intrusion and facilitate tidal flow. Residents have called for permanent solutions to sewage pollution, emphasizing regular maintenance of trash booms and ensuring culverts remain clear of water hyacinth for unimpeded water flow during the rainy season.
