Chennai Residents to Get Real-Time Air Quality Updates
21 Feb
Summary
- 75 locations will get environmental sensors for real-time pollution data.
- Data on air quality, noise, and weather will be accessible to the public.
- Civic body will act on readings exceeding safety thresholds.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) council has approved a resolution to deploy environmental sensors at 75 locations throughout the city. This initiative will make real-time data on 18 pollution parameters available to the public through the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).
Residents will have access to live updates on air quality, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, noise pollution, temperature, and humidity. Display boards will be installed with the sensors. If any readings surpass safety thresholds, the GCC will implement corrective measures. The collected data will also be stored for research purposes.
Four companies are vying for the tender to install these sensors and display units. The system will also monitor wind speed and direction, rainfall, and other environmental factors to assess their impact on public health in polluted zones. Vehicular emissions in high-traffic areas will also be monitored. Councillors have specifically requested real-time monitoring near the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumpyards and emphasized the importance of sharing this data with residents across the city's 15 zones.
