19 Jul
Summary
- Residents invited to submit nature photos and audio recordings to iNaturalist.
- The initiative supports local conservation and global wildlife tracking efforts.
- No expertise is needed to participate; curiosity is the only requirement.
Charlottetown is currently hosting a month-long BioBlitz event in partnership with Nature P.E.I. This initiative aims to celebrate and document the region's rich biodiversity.
Residents are invited to participate by submitting observations of local flora and fauna through the iNaturalist app. This platform allows individuals to identify nature around them while creating a valuable database for scientific research and conservation groups.
The collected data proves essential for various conservation efforts. Locally, the P.E.I. Invasive Species Council utilizes the app to monitor non-native species, and the City of Charlottetown uses the information for its nature repair projects. Globally, the data aids in tracking pollinator health and bird migration patterns.
Participation is straightforward: simply capture a photo of nature and upload it to the iNaturalist app. Organizers emphasize that no expert knowledge is required, only a willingness to explore and observe. While the official BioBlitz concludes this month, the iNaturalist app remains a resource for year-round observation and data contribution.
