Chandigarh Cracks Down: 4 Bins for Waste, Penalties Loom
26 Apr
Summary
- Residents must now segregate waste into four bins: green, blue, red, and black.
- Non-compliance with the new four-bin system can result in penalties up to ₹14,000.
- The new rules aim to improve Chandigarh's low score in 'segregation at source' rankings.

Chandigarh has implemented a mandatory four-bin waste segregation system, aligning with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. This new system requires residents to separate waste into green bins for wet waste, blue for dry waste, red for sanitary waste, and black for hazardous materials like batteries.
The municipal corporation aims for full implementation, directing officials to ensure compliance and warning of strict actions against violators. Residents failing to segregate waste correctly could face fines reaching ₹14,000, as per the new regulations. This initiative is a significant step towards scientific waste disposal.
This reform directly addresses Chandigarh's low scores in 'segregation at source' within the Swachh Survekshan rankings, a critical area for improvement. Bulk waste generators, including societies and commercial establishments, must now process wet waste at their source.
Special attention is also directed towards handling sanitary and hazardous waste safely. Used sanitary items must be securely wrapped, while hazardous items like CFLs, expired medicines, and batteries need separate disposal in black bins.
