Chandigarh Cracks Down on Waste Generators
21 May
Summary
- Bulk waste generators now defined by water use and area.
- Gated communities must manage waste at decentralized facilities.
- Violators face penalties, compensation, and legal action.

In a significant move to bolster waste management, Chandigarh's state-level committee convened to enforce the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. Chief Secretary H Rajesh Prasad has mandated the municipal corporation to prioritize the mapping of bulk waste generators and institutions.
Revised definitions under the 2026 rules now classify bulk waste generators based on daily water consumption (40,000+ liters), solid waste generation (100+ kg), or building area (20,000+ sq meters). Previously, only waste generation was the criterion.
Furthermore, gated communities exceeding 5,000 square meters are now required to implement decentralized waste management systems and adhere strictly to source segregation and processing. The committee stressed the importance of scientific processing, waste reduction, and active stakeholder involvement.
Public participation is crucial, as cleanliness and scientific waste management cannot be achieved by government efforts alone. Citizens, resident welfare associations, and institutions are urged to comply with their duties under the 2026 rules. Violations like littering and non-segregation will attract penalties, environmental compensation, and legal consequences.
