The municipal corporation and forest department of Chandigarh have initiated a significant plantation drive at the Dadumajra legacy waste dumping site. This effort is geared towards reclaiming and transforming the approximately eight acres of identified land into a flourishing green zone. The project aims to plant between 10,000 and 12,000 trees and flowering shrubs along the site's periphery and in adjoining areas.
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria inaugurated the drive, highlighting it as a testament to scientific planning and enduring environmental commitment. He stressed that the success of such initiatives should be measured by the survival rate of saplings, advocating for scientific methods and consistent maintenance. The administrator also launched the Greening Chandigarh Action Plan booklet and flagged off vehicles for sapling distribution and air quality improvement under the National Clean Air Programme.
The reclaimed area will be developed under the theme 'Swachh Harit Prangan,' featuring scientifically planned plantations and landscaped green spaces. This development seeks to create an ecological buffer, improve air quality, reduce pollution, and enhance the living environment for nearby residents. Ornamental shrubs and various tree species are being planted to achieve these goals.
