Chandigarh's municipal corporation is advancing an environmental initiative by installing Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) at all seven of its dhobi ghats. This significant step aims to treat wastewater generated from washing activities before it enters the city's drainage system. The municipal general house has approved the floating of a Request for Proposal (RFP) to manage and treat this wastewater effectively.
The project entails the design, installation, and a five-year operation and maintenance period by a selected agency. These ETPs, utilizing pre-seeded integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) technology, are designed to handle approximately 25 KLD of wastewater. The primary objective is to ensure the treated effluent meets the stringent standards set by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
This environmental upgrade is expected to yield cleaner drains and water bodies by reducing pollutants like detergents and oils. It will also enhance the city's environmental compliance and contribute to better urban sanitation. The municipal corporation will provide necessary utilities, while the contractor bears the responsibility for comprehensive plant management post-trial run.
