Chandigarh Air Quality Deteriorates After Diwali Celebrations

On October 23, 2025, the air quality in Chandigarh deteriorated to the "very poor" category during the Diwali celebrations, but it improved within hours, according to the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC). However, the air quality worsened again on the following night as some people continued to celebrate Diwali and burst crackers.
The 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) values recorded by the Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) showed an increase on October 25, 2025. The average AQI of the five monitoring stations in Chandigarh on October 24 was 224, which falls in the "poor" category. By 7 pm on October 25, the AQI at the CAAQMS station in Sector 22 alone was 204, also in the "poor" category.
While the weather conditions are still favoring cleaner air, experts warn that the situation may worsen in the coming weeks due to stubble burning in the region. Last year, Chandigarh had recorded its highest AQI of 461 on November 14, well after Diwali, due to fog and smog formation. The authorities have been using sprinklers on city roads for the past month to keep pollution levels low and will continue these efforts.
