Summary
- One lakh thornless bamboo saplings will be planted.
- Plantation aims to provide steady fodder for elephants.
- Initiative seeks to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary is set to plant one lakh thornless bamboo saplings and ten types of fruit-bearing trees across 125 acres. This initiative, approved by the wildlife wing, will commence during the ongoing monsoon season to maximize sapling survival.
The primary goal is to provide a consistent source of fodder, particularly bamboo leaves, for the sanctuary's 45 elephants and other herbivores. This aims to reduce their migration into human habitations, thereby curbing human-wildlife conflicts. Fruit-bearing trees will also benefit smaller herbivores, enhancing biodiversity.
Previous plantations included thorny bamboo, making it difficult for elephants to consume. The decision to plant thornless varieties is a key improvement. Officials believe this project can serve as a model for other sanctuaries facing similar food scarcity and habitat challenges for elephant populations.
