Chami Murmu, a 55-year-old tribal woman and Padma Shri awardee, has become a symbol of environmental change in Jharkhand. For the past 35 years, she has championed conservation, leading a network of 35,000 village women.
Through her NGO, Sahayogi Mahila, Murmu has facilitated the planting of 34 lakh saplings across more than 500 villages in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district. Her commitment began at age nine, influenced by her grandfather, who taught her the vital importance of preserving flora and fauna.
Facing early life hardships, Murmu established Sahayogi Mahila in 1989 to empower women. Her initiative enabled needy women to access bank loans and credit. Between 1990 and 2023, she reforested approximately 800 hectares of barren land in the Seraikela subdivision.
Murmu's significant contributions to environmental conservation and socio-economic upliftment were recognized with the Nari Shakti award in 2019 and the prestigious Padma Shri in 2024.
