Chambal Sanctuary Borders Redrawn: Conservation Fears Rise
3 Jan
Summary
- 732 hectares of land near Chambal River are now outside sanctuary limits.
- Local residents and traders welcome the decision for development opportunities.
- Environmentalists express concern over potential harm to local ecology and wildlife.

The Rajasthan government has officially modified the boundaries of the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary, releasing 732 hectares of land previously under restriction. This decision, effective since the formal notification was issued after the governor's approval on December 23, 2025, now defines the sanctuary area from Jawahar Sagar Dam to Hanging Bridge.
While homeowners and traders in Kota have lauded the move, anticipating relief from property restrictions and new industrial development opportunities, environmental advocates are voicing serious concerns. They fear the alteration will negatively impact the sanctuary's rich biodiversity, home to endangered gharials, turtles, and dolphins, potentially leading to increased pollution.
