Castle Rock Water: Chlorine Spike or Health Scare?
20 Feb
Summary
- Residents report nausea and diarrhea linked to tap water.
- Castle Rock Water assures water is safe despite chlorine increase.
- Maintenance switch from chloramine to chlorine causes taste changes.

Castle Rock residents have reported potential health issues, including nausea and diarrhea, which they suspect are linked to their tap water. These concerns arise as Castle Rock Water is temporarily increasing chlorine levels for system maintenance. This measure, which began around February 2, involves switching from chloramine to chlorine to clean the water pipes, a process that is expected to continue until May.
Despite resident complaints about changes in taste and smell, Castle Rock Water Director Mark Marlowe insists the water is safe to drink and meets EPA standards. He explained that chlorine is a necessary disinfectant and the temporary switch is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the water system. The utility anticipates this type of maintenance may be required again in the future, though not for another four to ten years.
Residents experiencing issues are encouraged to contact Castle Rock Water for testing. Solutions like water filters or leaving water out for 24 hours can also mitigate chlorine's effects. The utility has provided contact information and a website for further details and assistance, aiming to address customer concerns directly.
