Urban canals in Great Britain and Ireland are proving to be vital in combating rising city temperatures, according to new research. These waterways cool neighborhoods up to 50 meters from their banks, with the effect intensifying during heatwaves, offering temperature reductions of over 2°C. While canals do slightly warm surroundings at night, their daytime cooling is a significant benefit for millions living nearby.
The study modeled canal water temperatures and their interaction with the urban environment, analyzing 68 canals. The findings highlight the importance of these canals, especially as extreme heat events become more frequent, with recent heatwaves linked to thousands of excess deaths. Adapting cities to extreme heat requires diverse strategies, and blue spaces like canals play a critical role.
Approximately 6.2 million people reside within 1 kilometer of urban canals, highlighting their proximity to a substantial population. Beyond direct cooling, canals offer economic advantages, estimated at £14.4 million annually due to improved labor productivity, and potential reductions in CO2 emissions from active travel and decreased air conditioning use. These findings underscore the essential ecosystem services provided by urban waterways.
