- Farmers urge government to install existing bandharas immediately.
- Water conservation is crucial for drinking, agriculture, and wildlife needs.
In anticipation of a potential water shortage in Canacona taluka, the Shristhal Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) has put forth a proposal to the Goa State Biodiversity Board. The committee suggests constructing temporary minor bandharas across various drains within the panchayat area to conserve water and enhance groundwater recharge. The BMC has expressed readiness to spearhead this water conservation effort, seeking support and financial assistance from the Water Resources Department (WRD) for the construction. This proactive measure aims to mitigate the impacts of scarcity anticipated in the coming months.
Concurrently, a group of farmers from Poinguinim, supported by RG leader Prashant Pagi, has formally requested the WRD to take immediate action. They have called for the swift installation of all existing bandharas along rivers and rivulets throughout Canacona. Citing below-normal rainfall this year, the farmers highlighted the critical need to retain water levels. They emphasized that conserving water is vital not only for drinking purposes but also for supporting agriculture, livestock, and local wildlife, while also ensuring the sustenance of community wells during arid periods.
