California now observes September 4th as California Wildlife Day, a new annual observance established in honor of Jackie, the beloved bald eagle. This designation stems from Senate Resolution 140, which passed with bipartisan support in the California State Senate.
Senator Tony Strickland introduced the resolution, emphasizing Jackie's profound impact on connecting people with wildlife and conservation. Her life and family were closely watched via nest-cam, drawing a massive following who witnessed her resilience through various seasons and the joys and sorrows of raising eaglets.
Jackie's death was announced on August 10th, following veterinary care. In her memory, the Big Bear community is hosting a memorial event on September 5th at Fawn Park, with plans for a permanent memorial at the same location.
The resolution also acknowledges California's status as a state with exceptional ecological diversity, home to numerous species, including the bald eagle, California condor, and Mojave Desert tortoise.
