CA Offers EV Buyers $3.5K Discount
3 Jul
Summary
- California offers $3,500 for new and $1,750 for used EVs.
- Incentives apply to new EVs priced $50,000 or less.
- Only first-time electric vehicle buyers are eligible.
California has introduced new incentives totaling $135 million to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles, nearly a year after a federal tax credit expired. Governor Gavin Newsom's budget allocates funds for these rebates, which will be matched by participating automakers.
The program offers eligible buyers an immediate discount of $3,500 for new EVs and $1,750 for used EVs. These incentives are capped at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $50,000 for new vehicles and $25,000 for used. However, a special provision allows buyers of EVs from California-based companies, like Lucid and Rivian, to receive the discount regardless of price.
Designed to help California achieve its ambitious clean car and air quality targets, these new incentives are exclusively available to first-time EV buyers. This initiative follows a period of legal battles between California and the Trump administration over emissions standards and the state's authority to set its own regulations.
