California Air Alert: Dust Chokes Coachella Valley
2 Mar
Summary
- Elevated PM2.5 pollution advisory issued for California's Coachella Valley.
- Harmful levels of particle pollution stem from windblown dust.
- Residents advised to stay indoors due to serious health risks.

An air quality alert is currently in effect for California's Coachella Valley, including the San Gorgonio Pass and cities like Palm Springs and Indio. Elevated levels of fine particle pollution, known as PM2.5, have prompted advisories for residents to stay indoors.
The pollution is attributed to harmful levels of particle pollution from windblown dust. These particles are extremely small, less than 2.5 micrometers, allowing them to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream.
The advisory, issued by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, warns of potential serious health problems. Those in sensitive groups, such as the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing heart or lung conditions, are especially vulnerable to the effects.
To mitigate exposure, residents are urged to limit outdoor activities. Inside their homes, they should keep windows and doors closed, use air filters or purifiers, and avoid pollution-creating sources like candles or incense. The alert is expected to remain in place until early Tuesday morning.
