Calderdale Leads Yorkshire in Low Fly-Tipping Cases
25 Feb
Summary
- Calderdale recorded the fewest fly-tipping incidents in Yorkshire.
- Over £1 million was spent cleaning fly-tipped waste last year.
- Fly-tipping can result in a £50,000 fine or prison time.

Calderdale Council has the lowest number of fly-tipping incidents in Yorkshire, according to recent figures. Between April 2025 and March 2026, the authority managed 1,139 cases, significantly fewer than Bradford's 19,697. Leeds and Hull also reported substantially higher numbers.
Despite its low incident rate, Calderdale Council incurred costs exceeding £1 million for waste clean-ups in the past year. The council warns residents that they can be fined not only for dumping rubbish themselves but also if their waste is illegally disposed of by others.
Sam Pearson, Senior Highways Enforcement Officer, stressed the need for individuals to verify that anyone hired to remove household waste possesses an upper-tier waste carriers license. Failure to exercise this "duty of care" can lead to fines, even if the resident did not personally fly-tip the waste. This criminal offense carries a potential penalty of £50,000 or up to five years in prison.
