India is presiding over the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers' Meeting in 2026, under the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'. This significant gathering follows earlier meetings of the Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development.
The meetings aim to foster substantive discussions among ministers and experts, strengthening environmental cooperation. India has identified four priority areas for engagement: promoting sustainable lifestyles, afforestation, disaster resilience, circular economy, and climate change adaptation.
Discussions and deliberations on these themes have already commenced through virtual meetings and webinars since March 2026. The focus is on resource efficiency, circular economy, aligning carbon markets with adaptation goals, and addressing land degradation and wildfire management.
