Brewery Faces Production Halt Over Water Scarcity
7 Jul
Summary
- Water scarcity could force breweries to cease production.
- One pint of beer can require seven pints of water.
- Winter rainfall can create water supply 'feast or famine' cycles.

A director at Gun Brewery has issued a stark warning about the escalating threat of water scarcity, stating that potential shortages could force the facility to cease all production. Mark Berry, the director, emphasized that this is a critical issue the entire brewing industry must address.
Berry estimates that for every single pint of beer produced, approximately seven pints of water are consumed during the manufacturing process. Although Gun Brewery utilizes its own spring for some water needs, it remains dependent on the mains supply for other essential operations.
This concern is echoed by other water-intensive sectors, such as agriculture. A farm in West Sussex described a challenging 'feast or famine' cycle, where heavy winter rainfall is followed by dry spells, underscoring the necessity of effective water management and conservation strategies to combat future shortages.
