26 May
Summary
- Brazil commits $617.5 million to foster ecological investment in the Amazon.
- The Eco Invest program uses blended finance for sustainable projects.
- Investment aims to boost tourism, infrastructure, and the Amazon bioeconomy.

Brazil has committed 3.1 billion reais ($617.5 million) to foster ecological investment in the Amazon region. This funding is part of an expanded Eco Invest program designed to promote sustainable tourism, enhance infrastructure, and grow the bioeconomy, which is economic activity based on natural resources that preserves the forest. The program operates on a blended finance model, where the National Treasury provides loans at a low interest rate, requiring banks to mobilize at least four times that amount in private investment, with foreign investors making up at least 60%.
The Eco Invest initiative, launched in 2024, aims to reduce investment risks in the Amazon, a region crucial for global climate regulation. By creating financial incentives that do not rely on deforestation, the program supports Brazil's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Despite recent legislative setbacks in Congress that could weaken environmental crime enforcement, the Brazilian government has affirmed its commitment to its climate pledges and reducing deforestation.
The recent announcement saw the National Treasury allocate 3.1 billion reais, with eight banks committing an additional 10.1 billion reais in the latest Eco Invest auction. This financial injection is expected to support cooperatives producing Amazonian products like acai and Brazil nuts, as well as tourism infrastructure in conservation areas, reinforcing Brazil's dedication to sustainable development.
