Bradford Rats Overrun Businesses Amidst Fly-Tipping Crisis
23 Oct
Summary
- Businesses report massive rat infestation due to illegal dumping.
- Closure of local tips linked to increase in fly-tipping incidents.
- Rat poison use has quadrupled, impacting food manufacturers and schools.
Businesses in Bradford are urgently calling for more action from the council as fly-tipping has led to a significant rat infestation. Rubbish dumped on Carter Street and Granby Street has created foul smells and attracted rodents, impacting food manufacturers and an after-school club. One business owner reports using half a kilo of rat poison weekly to combat the problem.
This situation has worsened following the closure of several local waste tips in March 2024 as a cost-saving measure. This has prompted individuals to dump waste illegally, with building rubble, mattresses, and general household waste being found at the site. While the council has begun clearing the waste, businesses fear the problem will recur due to the lack of accessible disposal options.
An exterminator noted a rise in rat activity across Bradford in recent years, with multiple daily calls from residents reporting rats. The prolonged presence of rubbish allows rats to establish nests. An after-school club is concerned for children's safety, as parents cannot easily access the site and outdoor activities are being curtailed. The problem is ongoing, with businesses doubting the long-term effectiveness of clean-ups without addressing the root cause of increased fly-tipping.
In response to the growing issue, the council's new Reform UK administration has promised to reopen the Sugden End Household Waste Recycling Centre by the end of the year. Previously, in August, the prime minister visited an illegal waste site in Bradford to announce stricter fines for fly-tipping.
