Council to Use Online Stings to Catch Rogue Waste Traders
10 Mar
Summary
- Online stings will target unregistered waste traders advertising on social media.
- Drones are being used to search for illegally dumped waste in hidden areas.
- Over 100 tonnes of fly-tipped waste were removed from streets in the past year.
Bradford Council is launching new initiatives to tackle the significant issue of fly-tipping, particularly targeting unregistered waste traders who operate via social media. Planned "sting operations" will involve council staff posing as customers to identify individuals illegally offering waste removal services. Those unable to produce a valid waste carrier license risk fines and prosecution.
In addition to these undercover efforts, the council is employing advanced technology, including drones, to survey remote areas for illegally dumped waste. This complements existing measures such as 175 CCTV cameras across the city. Over the past year, approximately 100 tonnes of fly-tipped waste have been cleared from unadopted streets and alleys, highlighting the scale of the problem.
