Canada Smoke Chokes Boston Skies
15 Jul
Summary
- Wildfire smoke from Canada has made air quality unhealthy for sensitive groups.
- Air quality alerts are in effect for the entire state of Massachusetts.
- Fine particulates (PM2.5) are the main pollutant, posing breathing risks.

Air quality across the Boston area and the entire state of Massachusetts has been deemed unhealthy for sensitive groups due to wildfire smoke originating from Canada. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has issued statewide alerts for fine particulates, also known as PM2.5.
These tiny pollutants, measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller, can penetrate deep into the lungs and pose risks, particularly to children, the elderly, and individuals with heart or lung conditions. Experts suggest that sensitive individuals limit outdoor exposure and potentially wear N95 masks.
While home air filters can help mitigate indoor particle levels, keeping windows closed is also advised until the smoke dissipates. Current air quality measurements in southern New England range from moderate to unhealthy, with localized variations expected throughout the day.
Over 800 uncontrolled fires in Canada are contributing to the smoke plume affecting New England, with winds directing the concentration into the region. Conditions are expected to be worst through the mid-afternoon today, with forecasts indicating a southward shift of the main plume by tonight. Another plume is anticipated for Thursday, potentially leading to extended air quality alerts.
However, a change in wind patterns by Friday is expected to redirect the smoke away from the area. Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest forecasts.
