Borneo Haze: Cloud Seeding Mission Battles Toxic Smoke

The toxic haze stemming from ongoing wildfires in Indonesia has significantly affected Malaysian Borneo, particularly the state of Sarawak. Residents like Elaine Sim in Kuching have resorted to wearing masks outdoors and installing air purifiers due to the pervasive and hazardous air quality, with the Air Quality Index in Kuching reaching dangerous levels.

In an effort to combat the crisis, the Malaysian government allocated over $100,000 for cloud seeding operations in Sarawak. These missions involve spraying saltwater mixtures from aircraft into specific clouds, aiming to stimulate rainfall. The Royal Malaysian Air Force conducted a mission aboard a C-130H-30 Hercules, carrying thousands of gallons of saltwater and salt.

While cloud seeding aims to clear the air, its effectiveness is debated among meteorologists, as it is challenging to prove that rain would not have occurred naturally. Officials reported light rain in some areas after the mission near the Indonesian border, leading to a temporary lifting of an emergency in Serian. However, the AQI returned to hazardous levels the following day.

The persistent haze has not only impacted public health but also inflicted economic costs. Businesses have been forced to close temporarily, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of the fires. Experts emphasize that controlling the fires in Indonesian Borneo is crucial for a lasting solution, while indoor air filtration offers immediate protection.
