Jane Wallace's Bondi Beach home now features a vibrant native garden, replacing a previously disliked, disheveled yard. This transformation, covering 35 square meters, has turned the front space into an area reminiscent of a national park within a busy suburb. The project, known as Big Little Bondi garden, was recognized with the award for best small residential garden in the first Landscape Australia Awards.
Spearheaded by Bushy Landscapes, the design was informed by research identifying the local Eastern Suburbs banksia scrub ecosystem. The project aimed to enhance urban biodiversity and ecological resilience, challenging conventional front garden aesthetics. It successfully dissolved boundaries between private and public spaces by including the verge, with council approval.
The award winners, including this Bondi garden, were noted for their innovation and practicality, demonstrating how individuals can foster urban rewilding and drive community change. Other notable winners included transformations of a Victorian country tennis court and wetland projects in Brisbane and Melbourne, showcasing diverse approaches to ecological and landscape design across Australia.
