Blackpool Zoo has announced the exciting arrival of three African Lion cubs, the first of their kind to be born at the facility in more than ten years. This significant event brings a glimmer of hope for the vulnerable species.
The mother lion, Hira, gave birth to the triplets outside during the daytime on Sunday. This unusual occurrence has led to temporary visitor restrictions in certain areas of the lion habitat to ensure the newborn cubs' safety and well-being.
Zoo experts highlight that African Lions are classified as vulnerable. Their populations have seen a considerable decline due to factors such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and a reduction in their natural prey.
Section manager Adam Kenyon expressed the staff's delight, noting that the cubs' father, Khari, was the last African Lion born at the zoo in 2015. "His journey to fatherhood makes this moment even more special," Kenyon stated.
While acknowledging public excitement to see the cubs, Kenyon emphasized that their welfare is paramount. The partial closure of the habitat is under daily review, and even upon reopening, Hira is expected to keep her cubs secluded in their early days.
