16 Aug
Summary
- 20 blackbucks released into Banni Grasslands.
- Initiative aims to restore native wildlife and grassland ecosystem.
- Part of a larger Gujarat Native Herbivore Conservation Programme.

On India's 80th Independence Day, the Gujarat Forest Department, with technical support from Vantara, released 20 blackbucks into the Banni Grasslands of Kutch. This action signifies a crucial step in restoring native wildlife and the ecological integrity of this unique grassland landscape.
The released population consisted of five male and 15 female blackbucks, transferred from Vantara, Jamnagar, following all necessary approvals and protocols. This initiative is vital for rebuilding the ecological fabric of Banni by strengthening its native herbivore community and supporting natural predator-prey relationships.
The Banni release is integrated into a larger Gujarat Native Herbivore Conservation Programme. This broader initiative, approved by the Central Government, includes the translocation of 500 blackbucks and 100 chinkara. Vantara is providing technical support for this wider program, including specialized transport and veterinary expertise.
This effort underscores India's commitment to reviving native species and restoring grassland ecosystems. It builds upon previous conservation work by the Gujarat Forest Department, such as the rewilding of spotted deer in Barda Wildlife Sanctuary.
