11 Sep
Summary
- Visitor numbers fell 20% after wildfire at Dunwich Heath.
- Fire started at neighboring RSPB Minsmere, reopening later.
- The blaze consumed an area the size of 210 football pitches.
A significant wildfire that ravaged Dunwich Heath has led to a 20% decrease in visitor numbers since the nature reserve reopened. The blaze, which began on July 29 and took nearly two weeks to extinguish, is thought to have originated at the adjacent RSPB Minsmere.
While the fire destroyed wildlife habitats across an area the size of 210 football pitches, RSPB area manager Adam Rowlands confirmed that the majority of the reserve, including Minsmere's wetlands, was fortunately spared. The reserve fully reopened, and visitors are encouraged to return to experience its rich wildlife.
To support recovery, an emergency fundraising appeal has been launched. Rowlands highlighted the abundance of autumn and winter birdlife, including Dunlins and Great Egrets, and expressed optimism for welcoming more visitors and avian species in the coming months.
