Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has been detected in commercial poultry in Lincolnshire. Officials confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus at a premises near Gainsborough on Tuesday, April 15, 2026. This latest discovery follows similar findings at a site near Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire, and another near Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, both reported recently.
As a precautionary measure, all birds on the affected premises are to be humanely culled. This action aims to prevent further transmission of the highly infectious H5N1 virus, which can spread through bird secretions and contaminated environments. To contain the outbreak, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has implemented a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone around each infected location.
