Toyyar Lake: Biodiversity Hotspot in Peril

Villagers in Chimbel have voiced strong concerns regarding the Unity Mall project, fearing it will disrupt the habitat of Toyyar Lake. This eco-sensitive wetland, identified as a vital area for biodiversity, was surveyed in January 2025 as part of the All Goa Waterbird Count. The survey, organized by the Goa Bird Conservation Network (GBCN), documented 46 distinct bird species within a small 0.68km radius around the lake.

These findings underscore the ecological significance of Toyyar Lake. Notable species observed included the white-browed bulbul, blyth's reed warbler, and greater racket-tailed drongo. The presence of the grey-bellied cuckoo, a migratory bird often found in open forests, further emphasizes the lake's role as a seasonal refuge. GBCN is continuing its conservation efforts with the All Goa Waterbird Count 2026, with the next survey for Toyyar Lake scheduled for February 2026.

Environmental groups and local residents are united in their opposition to the Unity Mall development. They warn that the project poses a significant threat to the fragile ecosystem, potentially leading to irreversible damage and a reduction in biodiversity. The disruption could fragment ecosystems that have remained intact for decades, impacting both resident and migratory bird species.
